Fifty years of expansion from construction materials to iron and steel: Embracing the global markets with bold concepts and sound strategies.

Ono Kenzai Co., Ltd. established in Oita city, Oita Prefecture
The company gets its start as a wholesale dealer of
construction materials.

Onoken started out in 1925 as a privately-owned ironmonger handling corrugated iron and cement. After more than a decade spent building up a good track record and trust amongst its customers, it became Ono Kenzai, a limited company established to sell cement, ironware, and construction materials in Oita city. The paid-in capital was one million yen. The materials supplied by Onoken in the postwar reconstruction boom were used mainly for house building, contributing to the recovery of people's daily lives.

First growth opportunity: Moving into iron and steel products
By the second half of the 1950s Japan was emerging from its initial postwar phase. New buildings sprang up in the cities, ships were built and launched endlessly in the docks, and the demand for steel-the "rice of the industries"-was soaring. In the midst of this activity, Onoken opened a branch on a street in Kita-kyushu, a city at the heart of the steel industry, and began selling a full range of iron and steel items. Kita-kyushu was already host to a large number of iron and steel dealers, and Onoken was a late-comer. Therefore, in the early days, it began to handle product rejects at reduced cost, conscientiously handling orders as small as a single piece of angle steel or iron plate. This "client first" attitude steadily gained the trust of the clientele. Onoken extended its lineup of items from steel plates to steel shapes, and further to steel bars, eventually leading to the current business platform.

Second growth opportunity: Pioneers iron and steel product imports

Onoken's second growth opportunity came from handling imported iron and steel products. This step coincided with the move to the Osaka office. At that time, domestic manufacturers were establishing robust production systems capable of supplying large amounts of iron and steel. Imported goods were held in low esteem. Onoken pioneered the handling of imported iron and steel products, gaining a foothold in Taiwan and China and building up a global procurement network that included Eastern Europe, Australia, and South America. This overseas network has boosted the number of iron and steel product suppliers to more than 2,000. Imported products are no longer taboo, and iron is now traded at international market prices. Onoken's foresight has enabled it to develop a flexible supply system, capable of delivering the world's cheapest iron and steel materials in response to prevailing conditions.

Third growth opportunity: Challenging domestic brands
New challenges have been growing as Onoken responds meticulously to the demands of its customers. The third growth opportunity is the move into East Japan, centered around the consumption mecca of the capital city, Tokyo, where large-scale transactions are commonplace. In this environment, Onoken is establishing a "supermarket-type" business development model, where it can respond to orders both large and small from its great stockyard. Onoken's challenge today is to extend this "Kyushu" business style to become a nationwide business brand. The Urayasu Center, containing one of Japan's biggest stockyards, was completed in 2001, and Onoken is steadily achieving results in this third great challenge.
